Our sheets of felt are created with a wet compression and agitation process.  Bats of fiber are stacked in opposite directions in layers of six to ten (which determines the thickness of the sheet).  The bats are then wetted down and compressed.  The piece on top is stationary and the bottom agitates back and forth.  Color on the bottom goes to the top.  The top color moves to the bottom.  The process locks the fibers together.  Some sheets have a patterned top and bottom created by the compression.  The pattern may disappear with use over time.
